Boondocking Battery Math: A Simple Way to Plan for Internet, Cold Food, Lights, and a Laptop

No hookups sounds great until the battery math starts.

That is the point where a lot of good off-grid plans get fuzzy. You know you want cold food, some light, maybe a laptop, maybe internet, and a way to charge back up tomorrow. You just do not want to overbuy or run short.

That is where a small bit of math helps.

The one formula that makes this easier

Watts × hours = watt-hours for the day.

That is it.

If one device pulls 30 watts and you use it for 5 hours, that is 150 watt-hours for the day.

Start with the loads that actually matter

Write down the things you really plan to use:

  • internet gear,
  • lights,
  • a laptop,
  • phones,
  • a small fridge, and
  • anything else you know will run every day.

Then split them into two groups:

  • must-run loads — the things that make the trip work, and
  • nice-to-run loads — the things you can skip if clouds or shade show up.

A simple example

Starlink says the Mini accepts 12–48V DC input up to 60W, and the Mini spec sheet lists average power at 25–40W. So if you budget 30W for 5 hours, that is about 150Wh.

If your laptop averages 45W for 2 hours, that is 90Wh.

If your lights average 10W for 4 hours, that is 40Wh.

If your phones and small devices need 20Wh total, that is another 20Wh.

Now you are at roughly 300Wh before your fridge.

Then add your fridge’s actual daily number from its manual or label. That one step changes everything.

What this looks like in real use

If your daily total is around 250–300Wh, a 299Wh class unit may help for short bursts, partial days, or as a support piece.

If your daily total is closer to 400–500Wh, you probably want more battery, more recharge, or fewer hours online.

If you are building a fixed 12V system, storage and recharge need to be planned together. Battery without recharge only moves the deadline.

How to avoid the common mistake

Most people do the device math and forget the time math.

A fridge that cycles all day, a laptop that gets left plugged in, or internet that stays on longer than planned can quietly change the whole picture.

That is why it helps to ask one simple question first:

What really has to stay on after dark?

Expected results

Good battery math does not make your rig bigger. It makes your plan calmer.

You stop guessing. You know what to shut off first. You know whether a small portable station is enough, whether a bigger station makes more sense, or whether it is time to build around lithium storage and solar charging.

Field note: For 12V systems, use proper wire gauge and fusing. Consult a qualified technician. Improper installation can cause damage or injury.

Boondocking gets easier when the numbers stop being vague.

You do not need perfect math.

You need honest math.
